Second Life - The Emperor’s New Clothes

At last the cat is out of the bag - things are not what they seem at ‘Second Life’. I always felt that Second Life was essentially a PR creation. Fantastic press releases, a story that everyone wanted to believe but that could never be true.

See this report in ‘Wired’.

How Madison Avenue Is Wasting Millions on a Deserted Second Life

Millions of abandoned avatars, corporate pavilions all but empty. That sounds about right. It was all hype that everyone was desperate to believe.

People are not that bored, especially on the net. They go onto Facebook to keep in touch with their first life friends and to engage in a little bit of personal expression and to belong to groups and communities of like-minded people. That all sounds like things that people do anyway - Facebook is just a new way of doing it.

Avatars? Who needs ‘em. Real people are much more interesting.
