As part of my new found role as a rent-a-gob I have been flown all over the world to talk about 'New Media' (which you're not allowed to call it any more) or, more accurately, 'How Aardman exploits its properties across digital platforms'.
I get quite carried away and come across as very sage. People are mystified as to how we make money showing video on the web. Not many do. Even YouTube doesn't (yet -though it will).
Here, with great fanfare, is the secret to making money from showing video content on the Internet...
Have a look at our latest shorts to go up on entertainment portal Atomfilms:
www.atomfilms.com/pib_pog
The series is called Pib & Pog. It's a spoof pre-school show in which two apparently very cute pre-school characters turn sinister and violent at the slightest provocation.
There are three new films up there (and one old one made a while ago). As at today's date the views per title, after one week on the site, are as follows:
Pib & Pog: Daddy's Study 101,894 views
Pib & Pog: The Dentist 8,231 views
Pib & Pog: X-Factor 5,853 views
The original short film has been viewed 60,272 times after 4 years on the site.
Can anybody work out why 'Daddy's Study' has been viewed so many more times than the others?
Here's a clue.
Where video is concerned, the Internet is essentially a puerile playground. The video itself is reasonably innocuous and conforms to all AtomFilms standards and can in no way be described as pornographic. A child watching it wouldn't really have clue what was going on. But kids, and by kids I guess I mean boys aged 11 to 16 (or 24 even) who watch films on Atom are immediately drawn to the XXX Video that the character is holding and the 'Mature' label that has been added to the listing.
It's as simple as that. A cheeky title, a saucy thumbnail image and a bit of a plug on the homepage and you're away. Sorry Lighting Directors, Art Directors and Animation Crafts-People everywhere, it's a bit of smut that the audience wants - and they want it for free.
Also on AtomFilms is our series Angry Kid. Great title for an Internet show. Sounds dangerous already. One of the least funny episodes but most popular episodes of the 50 or so that we have made is called Angry Kid: Sex Call.
Surprised? You shouldn't be.
The golden bullet is a funny programme AND a smutty title. See Angry Kid: Tourettes as an example.
Things are not what they seem. Until someone points it out to you.
